It’s improved but ….

For a notebook app that is fairly pricey and one that has been around for a while, there are a number of areas that are still very weak. These are things that should have been corrected in this update. For example: When you “tab” at the start of a paragraph, the entire paragraph is indented rather than just the first line. You cannot continue typing or re-select while the text colour palette is open … frustrating and a waste of time. You cannot use “Transformations” to change text to Upper or Lower case. You cannot use System keyboard Preferences to define shortcut keys for common menu actions. You cannot select default tabs for a document. In fact there is no ruler to allow tab selection. These are commonly used functions that one would expect to find (or at least to work properly) in the most basic of text editors. The overall concept is good … This version is definitely better than the last.

Keine Anzeige von PDFs, keine Anzeige von Bildern, kein erfolgreicher Sync von PDFs

Zitat von der Internet-Seite des Autors: "For some users, Notebooks is unable to open PDF documents. This issue is related to “sandboxing”, Apple’s technology to keep apps from accessing documents they are not allowed to. We never enabled that for our beta versions, but when we sent Notebooks to the Mac App Store we had to. As a consequence, Adobe Reader is no longer allowed to open Notebooks’ documents… As a workaround, you can remove the Safari plugins for the AdobePDF Reader, which reverts settings back to use Preview. – To remove the plugins, just delete them from ~/Library/Intern Plug-Ins We are trying to find a solution to this issue, though. When trying to insert images from the file selector, all images are grayed out. This is also related to “sandboxing” and we are already preparing a fix for this.“ Der Autor weiss genau, dass sein Programm nicht sicher PDF-Dateien darstellen kann, bewirbt aber in seiner Vorstellung des Programms hier im App-Store genau diese Eigenschaft - wider besseres Wissen.

not at all like ipad version

Cannot sync pages documents well. Show up as packages. Can no longer see pdf preview. A downgrade from beta. The ipad version is excellent. The OSX version needs a lot of work, especially for a mac based product. I do not use word so how am I supposed to sync pages documents??

A very good start

First I have to say that the iOS version is truly superb and that the Mac version lacks in certain aspects. Things I would like to see fixed ASAP in the mac app: 1. The iOS HTML rendering is awesome. The mac app needs work 2. Markdown documents: No need to press the edit markdown button. Just let me edit it 3. I would love to be able to freely add folders from different locations rather than being limited to a single folder where all the books are stored. This app is exactly what I have been looking for, it is not perfect but with a little work and using it with the iOS version this has a potential to be HUGE! Good stuff!

How does this thing work?!

This program is impossible. Terribly user-unfriendly. The only instructions available are for the iOS versions, which I do not have. All of the information online is promotional, not instructional. So far it’s completely useless to me. Why did I pay $17.99 for this? Hello?! PDFs can’t even be read by the software. I want my money back.

It’s OK but ….

For a notebook app that is fairly pricey and one that has been around for over a year, there are a number of areas that are very weak. These are things that should have been corrected in this update. For example: Drag and Drop still acts like Option Drag & Drop. It leaves the original text in place. When you “tab” at the start of a paragraph, the entire paragraph is indented rather than just the first line. Grammar and syntax correction is implemented but not optional. Unless you are a touch-typist and are watching the text appear on-screen, you can end up with “corrections” that you did not want and do not even know about. The Menu command "Convert from Plain Text to Formatted Document" sometimes changes a whole paragraph to upper case. You cannot continue typing or re-select while the text colour palette is open … frustrating and a waste of time. You cannot use “Transformations” to change text to Upper or Lower case. You cannot use System Preferences to define shortcut keys for common menu actions. You cannot select default tabs for a document. In fact there is no ruler to allow tab selection. These are commonly used functions that one would expect to find (or at least to work properly) in the most basic of text editors. The overall concept is good … The implementation leaves much to be desired.

It is great to have a Mac companion to the IOS app

I use this app on my iPhone all the time. Being able to use it on my Mac too is vary handy. Keeps getting better.

getting better all the time

This is part of a very powerful system that uses Dropbox to sync with your iOS devices. I like very much the hierarchical menu system and being able to change orders and priorities. Considering its power it is, generally speaking, user friendly but there is room for improvement and there is nothing else like this out there for now.

I wish rtf-edit and favorite Folder function!!!!

Very good application!! But this app can edit only in PlaneText (.txt), FormattedDocument (.html) or MarkDown. Although RichTextFormat (.rtf) which I was using until now can be perused, it cannot be edited. If it can do, I will hope to enable it to edit rtf by this app. And I think that it will become convenient if the function simply accessed to favolite Folder is mounted.

Great app

1. This app is like a localized evernote. It stores your data on your pc instead on the cloud. This is great because I do not want to store my data on the cloud server for security. Notebooks also can synchronize your data between iOS device and Mac using your local network. (Of course the evernote can do all of these) 2. The other great feature is that notebooks app stores your notes as html files (rich text) or text files in your accesible folder, while in everntoe the notes are stored as the separate unreadable files in the deep folders in the library. Thus, if there are any bugs in this app in the future updates (this occurred in evernote recently), I still can view and edit my notes with the other applications. I believe the coming updates will make this app more fantasitic. And I hope the updates will not slow down the behavior of this app.

On iOS I use this program from the first test version. Great works and everything works flawlessly. In the version for the OS that everything works as it should, although versions of the test worked. I hope that Alfonse quickly painless with errors reading the PDF documents. If he manages to restore the functionality of mobile devices that I regarded him as the best program of its kind.

Very good note-taking app

I switched from Evernote to this app and it was a great choice. It has a nice, clean, uncomplicated layout. It stores everything on your computer in non-proprietary file formats, so you don’t have to worry about being locked out of your own files. It allows for multiple nesting of notebooks, which helps you organize everything just the way you like it (it doesn’t support tags, though, as far as I noticed). It allows you to hide the folder (notebooks) panel, giving you a very pleasant distraction-less writing experience. You can easily sync particular notebooks with Scrivener. The word count is far superior to the Evernote’s one. If it supported rtf format, it would be perfect. I can’t say much about syncing with Ipad, since I use the program on my laptop only. While Scrivener is great for longer texts - this will probably be my go-to app for all the shorter pieces of writing.

I run my entire life using Notebooks

I’ve been a beta tester of Notebooks for a couple of years. I use it to organize pretty much everything in my life. Its big advantage is that I can drop any kind of file and it serves as a quick repository, organizer, and MulitMarkdown editor. It keeps in sync with the iPhone and iPad versions via DropBox. The closest other product out there is Evernote. While not as polished as Evernote, I find Notebooks to be much cleaner. I can quickly find what I want, can edit text quickly (markdown is a real boon). Furthermore, my Evernote content is stored on their servers and can only be navigated and manipulated with their rather cluttered interface. Notebooks keeps content in a DropBox folder hierarchy. I can get directly to content when needed, and it lives on all my machines in formats I can get to and open in or out of Notebooks. In short, the combination of the desktop app and mobile apps gives me everything I need to organize my work life and keep everything in one place, easily accessible.

Excellent App!

I can’t express how great this app is! I have been using this app for the better part of the last two years, so I’m very happy it is finally available on the Mac App Store!!! I also use this app on iOS and the syncing between iOS and the desktop version is great, I have never had any problems with it. I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking for a great note taking app!

Neat and Convenient

I like the simple design of this app. Clean and easy to use interface to organize your markdown/plain text notes. (Most of the time you don’t need complicated tools.) You can split the document anyway you want. This app does not hide your document in complicated data structure. All notes are organized as files and folders. In other words, you can also edit and view notes using your favorite editors. Since all notes are just folders and files, you can seamlessly sync with iPhone/iPad through Dropbox. It will be just a folder in your dropbox, and you can view/edit your document on the go!

It’s the Swiss Army Knife of Apps

The Notebooks apps on iOS are great for doing exactly as advertised: being a storehouse of just about every file type you can think of. With nested books, ToDo lists, PDF viewer, drawing app, etc, it’s all there. Since it all syncs via Dropbox, it’s only natural to want a Mac version to work with all the material in your Notebooks folder. The Mac version of Notebooks is a great frontend to the Notebooks folder in Dropbox. It lets you access the files to view them, as well as write in the various formats (Plain text, formatted, and Markdown). The app is laid out nicely, with options to hide folder and file lists. Access to recent documents as well as the insertion of timestamps make picking up where you left off on the mobile devices a snap. The Mac app integrates Adobe Reader’s PDF plugin into the app. (The last piece to make all the Notebooks iterations reall shine is PDF annotating). Even if you didn’t have the Notebooks apps on iOS devics, this Mac version is a great app for working on and viewing files all in one place. It’s a great app for writing whatever you need to write, whether the organized chapters of a book or a quick note to jot down a phone call. Dragging and dropping files makes putting them where you need to be a cinch. Notebooks is a great alternative to Evernote, especially if you don’t want to pay the subscription fee and you want a non-proprietary backup like Dropbox gives you. Finally, I was curious as to what the Notebooks for Mac price would be and less than $20 makes this an easy purchase. The apps are worth every penny (paid once and not ongoing) and I’m personally happy to contribute something for the continued development of a great app.

Adjusting picture’s size is impossible?

I have trided to adjust the size of an imported picture. But I cannot find any option about it. I want to refund my money.

Cream of the Crop

I’ve tried many notebook type apps, and Notebooks seems to be the most well rounded for my needs. Notebooks is feature loaded and can handle pretty much any file. It works across all my Apple devices (currently via Dropbox, but the devs are creating "a little Mac app which basically is a WebDAV server, but one that runs on your Mac on your WiFi. So with the sync capabilities already built into Notebooks on iPad and iPhone, you will be able to sync with a local folder on your Mac”). Support questions are answered promptly by the developer. And, I especially like that Notebooks does not use a proprietary file system so my files aren’t locked into the app for eternity. The search and wait is over! Yay!

I live in Notebooks

I’ll take a note in a meeting on my iPad. Update it on my iPhone as I’m talking to someone in the hall afterwards. Sit down at my Mac when I get to my desk and keep working on the same document. A few minutes later I’ve fired off an email with the meeting notes, all perfectly formatted with a stylesheet that matches the one we use on our wiki. I have over 500 meeting notes, documents, and chapters synchronized from Scrivener, all sitting in Notebooks. I use it every single day. For the first time in my life, everything is in one place and instantly searchable, editable, and formatted.
